Becoming An Approved Driving Instructor What Must You Do

driving instructor training student passesThe DVSA set the driving instructor certification requirements and there are three tests that you need to pass. The tests are challenging so that the people who pass can be fully prepared to teach others how to drive. Like any adult learning course, being a driving instructor takes dedication and hard work. With the right attitude and determination, it is possible to pass the exams and become a driving instructor.

Part 1: Theory & Hazard Perception

You must pass both the theory and practical tests in this part of your qualification process. The first part of the qualification process you will be given 1.5 hours to complete 100 multiple-choice questions. Next, you’ll have half an hour to watch 14 videos and identify the emerging hazards as soon as possible.

The theory test will assess your knowledge about the Highway Code, driving techniques, general road safety, first aid knowledge, and theory of instructing pupils. The test is 90 minutes long and you must get both, an overall score of at least 85 out of 100 and at least 20 out of 25 in each of the 4 categories.

You must score at least 57 out of the 75 points to pass the hazard perception test. To pass Part 1, both tests must be passed.

Part 2: Advanced Driving Skills

You will be taken on an advanced practical driving test that will test your driving skills and knowledge of the Highway Code. The driving test lasts one hour and includes five parts: vehicle safety, eyesight check, general driving ability, manoeuvres and independent driving.

Passing the Part 2 Driving Ability Test requires that you make no more than six driving errors, none of which should be dangerous or serious.

After passing your driving proficiency test, you are granted your Part Qualified Instructor (PQI), which permits you to begin teaching lessons before you take your final Instructional Ability Test.

You are now able to make a living as a driving instructor. Your PQI license is only valid for six months.

Part 3: Instructional Ability Exam

One of your customers will receive a 1 hour driving lesson while a DVSA examiner monitors you. A learner driver or a full license holder can be your student. The examiner will look for evidence that you meet the required national standards for driver and rider training. These 17 areas are divided into three categories: lesson planning, risk management as well as teaching and learning strategies.

At the end of the test the examiner will review your performance and give you your Part 3 report. You must get either a grade A or B to pass.

Part 3 is a test that you must pass to become an approved driving instructor on the DVSA register. This will allow you to apply to receive your first ADI badge. If you fail the test you can retake it within 2 years after passing your Part 1.

After initially qualifying, you’ll need to pass another part 3 exam within six months. Every 2 to 4 years, you will need to take the standards check (the 3rd exam).

Part 2 and 3 are limited to three attempts so it is important that you choose the right school before starting to train to become a driving instructor. Failure to pass the third time will result in you having to wait 2 years from the date that you passed the Part 1 test before you can start again.
